Ennerdale to Rosthwaite
Through Ennerdale into the Heart of the Lakeland Fells
The Coast to Coast enters a very different landscape beyond Ennerdale Bridge, following Ennerdale Water before continuing deep into one of the Lake District’s most remote valleys. Woodland, open fell and the surrounding mountains increasingly dominate the route as it approaches the head of Ennerdale and the high ground beyond.
From the upper valley, the route climbs towards the Honister Pass, passing beneath some of the great western fells before descending into Borrowdale and Rosthwaite. This is a landscape shaped by mountain geology, water, woodland and centuries of human activity, from historic forestry and mining to the farms and settlements of the valleys.
The articles below explore the mountains, valleys, historic sites and natural features encountered along and around this stage of the Coast to Coast. Together they provide a closer look at the landscape through which the route passes, including places and features that can easily be overlooked while concentrating on the walk itself.
