Bulmer Steel is slightly north of Bulmer Steel Hole, each of which are rocky formations sited between Ness Point to the south and Castle Chamber to the north. Bay Ness is 1 mile to the west and Whitby 5 miles to the north. Robin Hood's Bay is 1.5 miles south along the coast.

At Bulmer Steel there are several curious ironstone horizons in the layers of foreshore rock. There is a layer of chamostitic oolitic ironstone, 9 meters above which there is a curious ironstone horizon. It is curious because it is bimodal in origin with concretions about 0.10m in diameter at the top of a 0.20m concretionary bed. On the foreshore you can see at this location, large fallen blocks of sandstone. The top of these blocks often have rippled surfaces and are covered with well preserved shell debris, which includes Pseudopecten Protocardia Gryphaea, Liostrea and the scaphopod Dentalium. The Dentallium display well developed sea current orientation.

At the base of the cliff and on the foreshore there is a large 3.5m section of grey siltstones with grey nodule horizons. Here there are oistoceras figulinum, which is indicative of the top sub zone of the davoei bio zone.
