Oxnop Scar, Mukler, Coast to Coast

Oxnop Scar is located near the summit of Oxnop Common, known as Blackstone, which peaks at 584m. The Scar is on the opposite side of the moorland road, appropriately named Cross Top, between Askrigg and Muker. The Scar evolves from the head of the Oxnop Valley and projects northwards around the east side of the valley, i.e. the Satron Moor side until reaching Stotter Gill. The Scar comprises a vertiginous limestone cliff face, and growing within it are aspen clones and several juniper bushes. From the top of the Scar there are prodigious views across Swaledale, notably to Kisdon Hill, Muker, Ivelet Moor and Gunnerside. To its east is Satron Tarn and Summer Lodge Tarn.

Oxnop Scar Oxnop Common

Oxnop Scar is a long band of exposed limestone that forms the east side of Satron Moor, and is also the west wall of the Oxnop Valley. The Scar is contained within the 470-480m contours. A wide track accompanies the edge of the Scar, and continues to the hamlet of Satron..

Oxnop Scar

A bluff on Oxnop Scar provides a valley window from where there is an outlook along and down the Oxnop Valley to Swaledale below. Tree species growing within the cliff face also provide geological information that help us learn more about the past.

Oxnop Scar and the path above

Looking south from Scar Top you can see the path providing cliff top access. Opposite, Oxnop Beck Head is perceptible. Its spring issues about 200 yards up the hill, and its channel can be traced as it zig zags down.

Oxnop Scar

Some sections of Oxnop Scar display some interesting features, such as the yawning cavernous mouth at Scar Top. Other interesting features include the variety of tree specifes growing within the cliff's face.

Aspen Clones and Juniper

On the Oxnop cliff face there are a variety of foliar growths. In particular there are a couple of juniper shrubs and a number of aspen clones. Aspen is able to regenerate using shoots and suckers, which results in the growth of genetically identical trees (clones) with a shared root structure. Aspen Clones can live hundreds of years longer than their parent. These trees are close to their altitudinal limit.

The Band of Oxnop Scar

To perceive the length of Oxnop Scar it is best to view it from the Moorland Road. Below the Scar is Oxnop Gill and its wooded valley.
