Hartley Beck flowing through Hartley Villaqe
Hartley Beck, Kirkby Stephen, Coast to Coast
Hartley Beck has its source between Hartley Birkett and High Out Wood, only 1/4 mile from Ladthwaite Beck. It flows south of Hartley Quarries and then passes beneath the Merrygill Viaduct to enter the ribbon village of Hartley, flowing in a narrow stream between the village road and the village gardens.
At Hartley Fold Farm the beck swings west to pass to the north of Hartley Hill and the Reservoir on Kirkby Hill. The Beck has a few interesting cascades on this short west bound stretch before it converges with the River Eden outside of Kirkby Stephen.
Hartley Valley
The main part of Hartley Valley is wooded and occupies the north east and northern foot of Low Out Wood, heading towards Hartley Quarries but passing around it to reach the Merrygill Viaduct. Seen from Hartley Birkett the course of the Beck through the deciduous valley is patently obviious, even though the beck itself cannot be seen.
Merrygill Viaduct
After passing the Hartley Quarries, Hartley Beck flows beneath the Merrygill Viaduct south east of Hartley Village. This viaduct was designed by the famous Cumbrian engineer Thomas Bouch, and has a grade II Listing. It is built of locally sourced limestone and has 9 arches, the tallest being 78 feet high. The arch spans are 30 feet each, and cover a length of 366 feet.
Dense Woods Hartley Valley
The Hartley Valley around Merrygill Viaduct is densely wooded and an attractive habitat for the indiginous roe deer.
