Ravenseat Hay Meadows
Ravenseat, Whitsun Dale, Coast to Coast
Ravenseat lies at the head of the south section of the Whitsundale Valley, where the Whitsundale Beck bends from the west and turns to the south, having been blocked in its easterly trajectory by West Stonesdale. Ravenseat is a popular mid-way breaking point for Coast to Coast walkers making their way from Kirkby Stephen to Keld, and represents a complete change of scenery from the waterlogged moors of Birkdale Common and Ravenseat Moor.
The Whitsundale Beck wends its way from Near Grains on White Mossy Hill, and tumbles ever east and south to converge with the River Swale at High Bridge.
Ravenseat was made popular by the t.v. series "Our Yorkshire Farm" in 2018, and its sequel "Our Farm Next Door". The farms are the successive homes of the Owens who are quasi reconciled following a separation, and the farms are run jointly by them and their children.
Ravenseat Whitsun Dale
Ravenseat lies at the main head of Whitsun Dale, serenely positioned at the foot of Ravenseat Moor and hedged by West Stonesdale Out Pasture and Birkdale Common. On barmy summer months the farmstead, despite its solitude, presents a wonderful impression of a family run sheep farm and the blissful, halycon days we all long for.
Ravenseat
Seen from the foot of Ney Gill Hill, on the upper Whitsundale Beck, Ravenseat is striking with the 549m Robert's Seat towering at its rear. Whitsundale Beck begins life as Near Grains at the foot of White Mossy Hill. As it reaches Ravenseat its valley broadens out and turns south towards Upper Swaledale.
Our Yorkshire Farm
Ravenseat featured in a 2018 TV series, "Our Yorkshire Farm", and starred Amanda Owen, who is more familiarly known as The Yorkshire Shepherdess. The series depicts the life of the family in this isolated farm, as they experience it year round. It was aired by Channel Five and has proved very popular.
Ravenseat Bridge
Ravenseat Bridge is an 18th century Packhorse Bridge and has a Grade II Listing. It provides passage over Whitsundale Beck to attain Ravenseat Farm, and the luxury of home made refreshments when the farm is open. A good sized car park is provided for visitors.
Jenny Whalley Force
Jenny Whalley Force, a small but attractive waterfall. conceals itself at the rear of Ravenseat Farm on Hoods Bottom Beck, a tributary to the Whitsundale Beck. Hoods Bottom Beck springs on Fog Close to the west of the 552m Hugh Seat Nab.
Ravenseat
The only vehicular road into Ravenseat is the single track moorland road that branches off the B6270 Kirkby Stephen to Keld road. Ravenseat's surrounding fields yield to the yellow wildflower herbage of traditional Swaledale hay meadows. Having tramped over Birkdale Common to reach Ravenseat, the splendrous valley festooned with its wild flower yellows and whites triggers a tremendous desire to linger. And quite often you can, in Ravenseat's tea-room or bed and breakfast.
Alderson Seat
Alderson Seat is at the top of Ravenseat Moor. It rises to 558m and its summit is marked by a cairn. It is easily viewed from Ney Gill Hill. A quarry occupies its upper south face, easily seen from a distance.
