Osmotherley Pinfold, Coast to Coast
Pinfolds were a feature of most medieval villages. The pinfold in Osmotherley dates from the 18th century. The purpose of a pinfold is to provide an enclosure where stray animals such as dogs, cattle and sheep could be impounded. They would normally be released on payment of a fine.
The Osmotherley Pinfold is a registered Common and a designated Grade II Listed Building. The wall is of sandstone construction. There is an open entrance to the Pinfold. Its interior is handsomely adorned with multi-coloured leafy shrubbery.
Osmotherley Pinfold is located at the North End of town, a little south of Ruebury Lane, the footpath that leads off to the left to aim for the Lady Chapel. The Pound is a short walking distance from Cod Beck Reservoir, Mount Grace Priory, the Lady Chapel and Arncliffe Wood.

As far as pinfolds go this one has to be one of the most attractive. The diversity and colours of the Pinfold Garden are exceptional. This is common land, which makes the presentation of the pinfold even more excellent.
