Whitby Marina, Whitby, Coast to Coast
Whitby Marina is located where the River Esk flows into the North Sea. It is 6 miles to Robin Hood's Bay, following the coastal path, which includes the Coast to Coast path from Hawsker Bottoms onwards. Littlebeck is 5 miles to the south and Grosmont is 10 miles to the south west.
The Esk was first encountered by the Coast to Coast path while in its infancy as Esklets where Westerdale Moor meets Farndale Moor. The path continually encounters the River Esk, in particular at Glaisdale, Egton Bridge and Grosmont. At Sleights the Coast to Coast path parts company with the Esk, the former heading to Robin Hood's Bay and the latter to Whitby Marina.

The main industries in Whitby are maritime, mineral (jet and alum) and tourism. Whitby was a fishing port back in the Middle Ages. Captain James Cook moved to Whitby when he became an adult and learned his trade there, before serving in the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. Later, he mapped New Zealand and the east coast of Australia.
