A close-up view of Galloway cattle grazing within the ancient bounds of the Woundell vaccary, now part of the Wild Ennerdale Project. Behind them rises the wooded dome of Latterbarrow, its semi-bald summit forming a striking contrast against the forested flanks.

A shaded stretch of Smithy Beck winds through the deciduous heart of Latterbarrow Oak Wood, near the Ennerdale Water shoreline. The surrounding canopy of oak and birch creates a humid microclimate ideal for mosses, liverworts, and other rare bryophytes of European conservation interest.

Smithy Beck widens as it nears the shore of Ennerdale Water, flowing through a woodland of oak and birch on the eastern flank of Latterbarrow. The beck’s tributaries — Starling Gill and Clews Gill — join upstream to encircle the hill, feeding cascades and a prominent waterfall hidden within the trees.

Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre is positioned immediately south of Latterbarrow. From here you can look south without obstruction from the forest canopy, to Lingmell, 435m and Steeple, 819m. During inclement weather they can be seen esoterically fading in and out of the mist.

A rising section of Ennerdale Forest Road extends eastward from Latterbarrow, its southern flank clear-felled to reveal a mist-veiled view down the Ennerdale Valley. The track leads toward Scarth Gap and the distant Gables, where the forest gives way to open fellside and the path continues to Black Sail.
