Breckon Howe, Sleights Moor, Coast to Coast
Breckon Howe is a Bronze Age Round Barrow found near the junction.of the A169 with the moorland road to Goathland. It is located at the east end of Whinstone Ridge, a quarried ridge with a central (and sheltered) channel, and is 0.5k south of Pen Howe. Breckon Howe is part of the same row of Round Barrows as Pen Howe, i.e. from the Flat Howes in the north to Low Woof Howe further south. This Row may also be a Ley Line.
The Low Bridestones and the High Bridestones are found 1 mile west on the moorland road upon which Pen Howe stands, with the village of Grosmont1 mile further west of the Low Bridestones.
Breckon Howe Sleights Moor
Breckon Howe, a Bronze Age Round Barrow, has a Boundary Stone embedded onto its apex, which makes the Round Barrow stand out more. The Barrow is located on the 297m summit of Sleights Moor and rises 6 feet above the top of the mound. The Boundary Stone is one of a long chain emanating from Grosmont and extending south to the Vale of Pickering.
Boundary Stone Breckon Howe
From the top of Breckon Howe there is a clear view across Sleights Moor, to the north, to Pen Howe, which illustrates the length and flatness of its top. The south facing side of the Boundary Stone bears the inscription "Goathland boundary determined at York Assizes 1813". The Boundary Stone is a Grade II Scheduled Monument.
South and East Sides of BS
The Stone's inscription can be seen on its south side, while looking northwads towards Esk Dale and Sleights.
North and West Sides of the BS
Facing the stone from the north there is a view to the moorland road that leads to Goathland.
Whinstone Ridge
Whinstone is the name given to a long ridge of very hard rock that formed on the Isle of Mull in Scotland and flowed south east into the North York Moors. It is also known as the Cleveland Dyke and is most visible on the moorland above Goathland and Grosmont. The Ridge has been extensively quarried to provide cobblestones for road building.
