Botcher Gill, Gunnerside, Swaledale, Coast to Coast

Botcher Gill is one of the many tributaries to the Gunnerside Gill in Swaledale. It flows gently at first as it makes its way from the mires around Moss Dam. Eventually it reaches Botcher Gill Gate where its valley begins to deepen and its route to head sharply downhill. Just beyond Botcher Gill Gate is a modest sized waterfall that is famous for its exposed fossils.

Botcher Gill converges with Gunnerside Gill where its valley opens out at Botcher Gill Nook. The latter stage of the Gill is very steep, dropping from 450m to 350m within a 200 metre distance. Botcher Gill Gate is very close to the remains of the
Lownathwaite smelt mill.

Botcher Gill Lownathwaite

In the moorland wilderness around Lownathwaite, Botcher Gill provides a luxurient change of scenery, being tree lined and florally festooned, with a modest watercourse flowing through its midst. Passerines can be heard singing when taking the time to relax beside the waterfall.

Botcher Waterfall

Botcher Waterfall is famous for the large number of fossils found within it. Within the short stretch of Botcher Gill from Botcher Gill Gate there are 3 waterfalls flowing over, and thus exposing, Yoredale limestone. A layer of large bivalve shells in the cliff face can be seen, and within fallen rocks there are exposed fossiized corals. This is detailed by Griff J Fellows in his 2003 "The Waterfalls of England: a practical guide for visitors and walkers".

Botcher Gill Looking East

Immediately east of the waterfall the Botcher Gill begins its descent towards Botcher Gill Nook and the Gunnerside Gill. This is an attractive area of peace and tranquillity.

Botcher Gill Nook

Botcher Gill Nook is the south east corner (as the word nook implies) of the Lownathwaite mining region, the Gill separating it from Silver Hill. Silver Hill marks the beginning of the arboreal belt along the west bank of Gunnerside Gill between the Lownathwaite mines and the village of Gunnerside.

From Winterings Edge on the east side of Gunnerside Gill there is a stunning view up the Botcher Gill to Botcher Gill Gate, which marks the crest of its steep descent.
