Marske, Richmond, Coast to Coast
Marske is a small village in Swaledale, located 1/2 mile west of the River Swale and 5 miles west of Richmond and 4 miles east of Reeth. The village resides on the steep northern riverbank of Marske Beck and is dominated by St Edmund's Church, and Marske Hall on the opposite side of the Beck.
Marske lies at the south foot of Marske Moor below steep limestone cliffs, that form a horseshoe of cliffs and dales. The Moor slopes gently south to north and peaks at 333m. Marske flourished in the 18th century during the lead mining bonanza.
Marske Hall
Marske Hall, a 17th century former mansion house, is elevated above the south riverbank of Marske Beck, about 1 mile west of the River Swale. The Hall lies on the opposite side of the Swale than Marske Village, in substantial grounds off Cat Bank. It has now been converted into luxury holiday apartments.
Clock Tower Marske Hall
The roof of the stables and coachhouse at Marske Hall support a chamfered rusticated ashlar clock tower. This has a cornice surmounted by a 19th century cupola which has a lead roof and weather-vane. It is a Grade II Listed Building.
Gothic Barn Marske Hall
A gothic barn stands in the grounds of Marske Hall and is a commanding landmark from Cat Bank, when approaching the village. It has a grade II Listing. Its use is as a cow byre and hay barn and dates to the 19th century.
The Clints
The Clints is a road, changing to a track after 100 yards, located at the north border of Marske. It extends to Orgate Farm, from where it meets the track and road comng from the south of Marske. This makes for a good circular walk on each riverbank of the Marske Beck, with Orgate Force at the half-way point.
Cottage in Clapgate Bank
Entering Markse from Clapgate Bank there are many attractive cottages with equally attractive and well maintained gardens, including artistic topiary work. The whole village is beautiful to walk through. This cottage is at the intersection of Clapgate Lane with Old School Lane and has an extensive and beautifully maintained garden.
Home Farm Marske
Home Farm is located in Clapgate Bank on the north fringe of Marske. The Coast to Coast path passes in front of the farm before turning off to head across fields to Applegarth.
Village Centre Village Green
There is a small village green in the village centre near the top of the hill, and the junction of Clapgate Bank and Old School Lane. The village post office is located here.
Stone Shelter Marske
An arched stone shelter lies in Cat Bank, near to the corner of Hard Stiles. It was made for George Shaw who was the owner of Marske Hall between 1951 to 1966.
