Ridge Top path from Little Blakey Howe to the Lion Inn
Little Blakey Howe, Blakey Ridge, Coast to Coast
Little Blakey Howe is located about 400 metres south south east of the Lion Inn, and of Blakey Howe on Cockpit Hill. As with Blakey Howe, Little Blakey Howe is also positioned on the spine of Blakey Ridge, alongside the road.
A road junction abuts Little Blakey Howe. This is where the road to Farndale joins the Rosedale Road, and the junction can be quite busy when one of the Farndale Shows is on, as is often the case. The Esk Valley Walk begins at this junction and soon joins the Coast to Coast path just west of the Lion Inn.
Little Blakey Howe
Little Blakey Howe is a Scheduled Round Barrow and is topped with a tall 18th century boundary stone. The Barrow itself is only 5m in diameter and less than a half metre high. Its construction is of earth and stones. The Boundary Stone that caps the Barrow is 2m high and tapers towards the top.
Little Blakey Standing Stone
The Little Blakey Howe Boundary Stone has an easily identifiable lean when looked at from the east or west, and carries, near its top, the initials T. D. indicating it is a stone of Thomas Duncombe's estate, dating to the 18th century. It is thought likely that, as with the Blakey Howe Boundary Stone, it is a re-purposed prehistoric Standing Stone.
Little Blakey
Little Blakey Howe is not alone on the Blakey Ridge. There are many other round barrows located nearby. Further south along the ridge are Kettle Howe (the road moves to the other side of the ridge as it goes south) and Pike Howe. Further north is Flat Howe.
Ridge Path
From Little Blakey Howe you can look north along the ridge all the way to the Lion Inn. The ridge has a convex shape and is quite even. The heather has been cropped, allowing the top of the Lion Inn buildings to be seen. A path parallels the road all along the ridge top.
