The appearance of Thackdale, as you cross Holey Moor to reach either Whorlton Moor or Bilsdale West Moor, is quite unexpected. The otherwise flattish Holey Moor, as you progress towards the Dale, suddently shows a large and deep gash through which the very young Snotterdale Gill flows, creating a small waterfall where it drops to the Jet Mines. The track to the Jet Mines and to Snotterdale is seen protruding above the gash of Thackdale.

Snotterdale Gill is culverted beneath the track that edges onto the Jet Caves and Snotterdale Gill Waterfall. Thackdale and the Gill then proceed steeply downhill into the Snotterdale Plantation.

As the track attains Thackdale you can look both up and down the Dale. Looking up allows a peep of the Jet Mines, which congregate all around the edge of the grassy quagmire in the centre.

A wide track leads from the south east of Holey Moor, across part of Whorlton Moor and into Thackdale. On the far side of Thackdale the track runs west along the top rim of Snotterdale Plantation and from thence to Scugdale. Faceby Bank is in the distance.
