Littlebeck Hamlet, Sleights

Littlebeck hamlet is built around a number of fords that span the Little Beck. The main population of houses is to the north east of Little Beck. To the south of the fords is Little Beck Wood, which houses a nature reserve. The Wash Beck, which springs on the east side of Sleights Moor, has its confluence with the Little Beck in the hamlet's centre. There is only one road through the hamlet, steep sided into and out of Littlebeck. The Coast to Coast path passes through Littlebeck in order to attain Midge Hall and Falling Foss Waterfall and from thence to Sneaton Low Moor, a few miles to the south east of the village. Grosmont and Goathland are to the west, and Robin Hoods Bay about 5 miles to the east. Sleights is 1.5 miles to the north.

Littlebeck Methodist


The Littlebeck Methodist Chapel is located near to the ford that spans the Little Beck in the centre of this little hamlet. The Coast to Coast path slides past ithe chapel's front door, over the ford and into Littlebeck Wood.

The Gnome Woodcarver


One of the entrances to the Woodcarver's property, is met with a workshop advertising his craft. Beyond is Mill House. The home of the Woodcarver, Thomas Whittaker, is accessed from a bridge, which takes you to the west side of Little Beck. Mr Whittaker was known as the Gnome Woodcarver. During his lifetime he was a skilled woodcarver, descended from a long line of woodcarvers dating back to 1646. The Gnome was his craft's signature, hence his title. Despite his death in 1991, at the age of 81, the workshop continues to display his name.

The Stone's inscription can be seen on its south side, while looking northwads towards Esk Dale and Sleights.

The Old Mill Littlebeck


The Old Mill in Littlebeck was formerly owned and occupied by Thomas Whittaker, the well renowned Woodcarver of Littledale. Following the Woodcarver's death in 1991 the property was converted for use as a holiday cottage, together with other properties within the estate gardens.

Littlebeck Ford Littlebeck Lane


The ford at Littlebeck is on the east of the hamlet, where the road steepens considerably as it emerges from the ford. Little Beck flows south to north and becomes the Iburndale Beck at Iburndale on the south east border of Sleights, and shortly after merges with the River Esk on the north side of Sleights.
