Olliver Ducket Folly Fortress, Coast to Coast
The Olliver Ducket is a folly fortress located on the very north border of Richmond, on Pilmoor Hill just below Olliver hamlet and the Aske estate. Nearby, a little to the east of the Folly, is Scots Dyke, a linear earthwork that stretches between the River Swale and the River Tees. It dates between the first century BC to the first century AD. Olliver Ducket is a Grade II Listed Building. Another folly, Culloden Tower, is located at the south west edge of Richmond and this is also a Grade II Listed Building.
Olliver Ducket Folly Fortress
The Olliver Ducket folly fortress is thought to have been built by Daniel Garrett for Sir Conyers D'Arcy of Aske Hall. It was designed to be a prominent eye catcher and picnic area. Olliver Ducket dates back to at least 1727 when Sir Conyers purchased Aske.
Olliver Ducket Richmond
Olliver Ducket is conspicuous from the road, the B6274 when driving into Richmond from the A66. The Folly was named after the hamlet called Olliver, just east of Aske Hall. The two storey building may once have been the benefactor of a third storey, used to view the horses and hounds during the hunt. It has also been used to observe eclipses.
