Dungeon Hole, Jurassic Coast, Robin Hood's Bay
Dungeon Hole is one of the rocky coastal features of Robin Hood's Bay. It is immediately below Bay Village, 6 miles from Whitby. Like Dab Dumps it is within the Maw Wyke to Beast Cliff SSSI and the Beast Cliff (Robin Hood's Bay) SAC. It is also very close to the Cinder Track.
The cliff face above Dungeon Hole is shear. The foot of the cliff at Dungeon Hole has been piled with large boulders in an attempt to prevent sea erosion of the cliff face. The exposed sections of cliff display Pliensbachian Sediments having many tapering upwards cycles, many of which have minor erosion gutters.
Dungeon Hole Robin Hoods Bay
On inclement days thunderous waterfalls of rain run-off spill over the cliffs and into Dungeon Hole. Some of them seem to issue from out of the cliffs themselves, with no obviuous water source above but most have a channel of water at the top. This section of coast, up to Ness Point, is rich in rare ammonite species.
Coracles at Dungeon Hole
Coracles are a simple means of gettng around over difficult water terrain such as are found at low tide at Dungeon Hole. Rare ammonites can be found here, and some parts of the Bay's dome have scores of coracle tourists. Coracles are small light-weight one-man boats.
