The long road back to Clay Bank from Round Hill
Carr Ridge, Utrra Moor, Coast to Coast
Carr Ridge is the north west extension of Urra Moor, near Ingleby Greenhow, and is part of the Coast to Coast walk (sharing with the Cleveland Way) between Clay Bank and Round Hill. It is easily accessed from Clay Bank, where there is a large car park. A swift climb on foot along the easily travelled Cleveland Way paving flags will bring you to the ridge top where the path changes to dry grit on a fairly level path, with ferns each side and heath beyond. Carr Ridge is on the opposite side of the Clay Bank road to Hasty Bank.
Carr Ridge is part of Urra Moor, as is Round Hill, to where the ridge top walk leads. Carr Ridge is bounded to the north by the dense conifer woodland of Greenhow Plantation, which masks the steep drop of Urra Moor's north face once the ridge top is attained.
Hagg's Gate to Carr Ridge
From Hagg's Gate on Clay Bank there is a steep rise to 390m in a relatively short distance. The path is paved at this point, mitigating the climb a little. Once attaining the ridge there are plentiful views to the south, west and east. The north face looks out over the Vale of Mowbray but unfortunately the ridge rises to the north before reaching the steep drop of Jackson's Bank, obscuring a view of the Valley.
Back to Hasty Bank
The steep climb from Clay Bank levels off as you near the 375m contour, from where there is a terrrific view back to Hasty Bank and the dizzying escarpment of White Hill.
Roseberry Topping
Before reaching the earthworks on the east of the ridge, there is an impressive view of the iconic 320m Roseberry Topping. It is separated from the North York Moors by a half-mile. Standing alone in the Valley it occupies the north west cusp of the Cleveland Way and is striking from whichever direction it is viewed.
Ridge Path
The Carr Lane ridge path, in the summer months, is alive with purple heather blossoms. This part of Carr Ridge is about half way from Clay Bank to Round Hill. Jackson's Bank is to the north east and the path now starts to move away from the large earthwork that encompasses the entire western border of Urra Moor. A large Boundary Stone can be seen in the distance below the rise.
Greenhow Bank
As Carr Ridge nears the domain of Round Hill, a sweep of the NYMs comes into view as the edge rounds the Valley near Greenhow Botton. The darkened cliffs in the distance are those of Greenhow Bank. They are sheer and fall to the less steep scarp that is populated with the conifers of Greenhow Plantation. Neearer, is Rud Scar and Greenhow Moor.
Path Greenhow Botton
As Carr Ridge nears the issue of Maiden Spring a path crosses over the Cleveland Way. Follow it south and it takes you to the hamlet of Urra. Follow it north and it takes you to Greenhow Botton via a pass through Jackson's Bank. Botton is the old Scandinavian word for a flat bottomed valley.
