Hartlakes, Muker, Coast to Coast
Hartlakes is an area of Swaledale that occupies the flat area of land where the River Swale is deflected from its eastward direction out of Keld to the south towards Muker. This is opposite to the confluence of the Swinner Gill where the River Swale sweeps around Kisdon Hill. The ruins of Crackpot Hall overlook Hartlakes from the opposite riverbank. Keld is about 2 miles to the west of Hartlakes and about 3 miles to the north of Muker, using the footpaths along the River Swale. Rukin Wood joins Hartlakes on its west side.
Hartlakes is an abandoned scattered settlement. Although the properties comprising the old settlement are no longer in occupation they have been used since the time of their abandonment by persons of no fixed abode.
Hartlakes Swaledale
The Hartlake structure nearest Rukin Wood is the largest housing structure of Hartlakes. The property fronts right onto the Wood and has a clear aspect over the River Swale towards Crackpot Hall, which is almost directly opposite.
Bogle House Hartlakes
Bogle House (aka Boggle Hall, and Hartlakes Hall), one of the settlement houses, has a disquieting reputation for being haunted, and many locals testify of those they know who have come to harm while in its vicinity. it seems that the last tenant of the property, one John Alton (aka Snapper John), was once away with his wife while a daughter of their's set her clothes on fire and suffered an agonising death. Since this time locals say it has been haunted.
Bogle House Neighbours
This property is the nearest of the Hartlake settlement to Bogle House. Other than the Bogle House haunting this property, as with the others of the settlement, occupied a remarkably beautiful area.
Hartlakes
There are many scattered, abandoned Hartlakes ruins. The footpath from Muker to Keld passes between most of them, and there are often groups of people milling around them out of curiousity.
Beldi Hill from Hartlakes
From Hartlakes there is an inspirational view across the Swale valley towards Beldi Hill, and some of the lower mine workings below.
