Observing across Carlton Moor towards Bilsdale West Moor
Carlton Moor, Carlton-in-Cleveland, Coast to Coast
The Coast to Coast path proceeds from Live Moor, Gold Hill and Faceby Bank to Carlton Moor, after which this stretch of moorland descends to Alum House Lane and the col at Lord Stones Country Park. Carlton Moor rises to a trigged summit of 408m. The trig and separate cairn are placed on the side of the Coast to Coast path.
The nearest town to Carlton Moor is Carlton-in-Cleveland which is 1/2 mile north west, in the valley below. Faceby is not much further, and can be reached direct from a path that descends the moorland within Carlton Hall Wood, and then passing north west through farmland to reach Faceby.
Carlton Moor Descent
The paved descent of Carlton Moor to Lord Stones ia at first steep but it soon changes to a gentle descent to reach Alum House Lane. The entrance to the Country Park is on the opposite side of the road.
Disused Alum Quarry
The alum quarry operated between 1680 to 1774. In addition to the quarry there were steeping pits, a cistern and liquor trough to the alum house. Alum was used extensively as a mordant or binder in dyeing, which fixed the dye so that washing did not weaken the colour.
Carlton Moor Summit
The 308m summit is amply identified ny a Trig Cairn and a separate stone cairn. A mountain biking event held at Lord Stones Country Park had just commenced, and hundreds of observers are making their way along various view points along the route. The summit of Carlton Moor is an advantageous location to observe the Vale below.
Busby Wood Carlton Moor
From the edge of Carlton Bank, which is the name given to the acclivitous west face of Carlton Moor, your gaze is drawn to a large coniferous wood on the Bank's lower and more gentle slopes. This is Busby Wood, the crown of which rises to 230m.
Carlton Bank
The Coast to Coast path (and the Cleveland Way) stretch along the ridge of Carlton Moor, the ridge on the west side being known as Carlton Bank. Carlton Bank extends from the summit cairn to Faceby Bank, which lines up with Faceby Plantation where a large section of it extends up the Moor.
Whorl Hill
From Carlton Bank there is a clear view across Mowbray to Whorl Hill. Opposite the Hill is Faceby Plantation. The village of Faceby can be see to the east of Whorl Hill.
