Danby Wiske to Swainby
Across the Vale towards the Cleveland Hills
From Danby Wiske, the Coast to Coast continues eastwards across the Vale of Mowbray through an open agricultural landscape of fields, hedgerows, quiet lanes and scattered villages. The walking remains predominantly gentle, but the distant Cleveland Hills increasingly dominate the eastern horizon, signalling the approaching end of the long lowland crossing.
As the route passes through and around the villages of the eastern Vale, the landscape gradually begins to change. Streams, woodland and enclosed farmland accompany the path towards the foot of the hills, while old churches, farms and settlements reflect the long agricultural history of this fertile country. Beyond the Vale, the rising ground around Swainby and Ingleby marks the transition towards the North York Moors.
The articles below explore the villages, historic sites, waterways and landscape features encountered along and around this stage of the Coast to Coast. Together they provide a closer look at the eastern Vale of Mowbray, where the seemingly level journey across the lowlands gradually gives way to the wooded slopes and higher ground of the Cleveland Hills.
