Looking across Gunnerside Valley from Knot Top to Brownsey Moor
Brownsey Moor, Melbecks, Gunnerside, Coast to Coast
Brownsey Moor peaks at 544m and sits above the River Swale north east of Gunnerside and North West of Low Row. Brownsey Moor merges with Melbecks Moor to the north west. These two moors house many disused mine workings. in particular the Old Gang Mines and Lownathwaite Mines.
The old mining roads are used extensively by mountain bikers, particularly those passing through Lodge Green, above Gunnerside.
Bents Lodge Green
From the hillside north of Gunnerside, High Bents (left), Bents and another nearby building are conspicuous. So, too, are the line of trees growing along the limestone scar just below the pasture and up Bents Gill to the west.
Barf End
A close up of the building due east of Bents (centre) illustrates its unusual design. Raised prominently on the hill (but only peeking out in this image) is Barf End. This is a Grade II Listed Building dating to the 18th century. Once a domicile It is now partly ruinous. It is positioned close to Stanley Gill, which flows direct to the River Swale.
Barf End from Middle Bank
From Middle Bank, you can look along the Gunnerside valley towards the village, and on top of the hill taking centre stage, is the striking silhouette of Barf End, a Grade II Listed domicile, now falling into disrepair.
High Scar and Low Scar
Two Scars can be observed from Knot Top when looking across the Gunnerside Valley. The highest is High Scar which follows the 500m contour and the other, lower down and more to the west, is Low Scar, which descends from the 480m contour above Winterings.
Whin Hall and High Scar
Whin Hall is located on a track leading from Gumnerside to the Winterings. It is positioned below High Scar, a long band of limestone cliffs on the 500m contour, extending from a small valley that notionally marks the end of Brownsey Moor and the start of Melbecks Moor, if such a boundary exists in actuality.
The Winterings
The Winterings are a small cluster of aged farms and cottages, raised up on a wide ledge above the north riverbank of Gunnerside Gill. They are close by to Whin Hall.
