Marrick Hamlet, Swaledale, Coast to Coast
Marrick is a farming hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales that is 1 mile north east of Marrick Abbey, 2 miles east of Reeth and 2 miles south west of Marske. Marrick was once a village, but ceased to be such when its only public house closed. This was the White Horse Inn, next to the Manor House. Villages need to have at least one pub and one church.
Marrick was a village in the 16th century, providing housing for the hundreds of miners working in the nearby mines around Marrick Barf and Garnless Scar to the north west of the hamlet. The lead mining industry having failed some time ago, the miners vacated the hamlet and moved elsewhere. The Marrick Smelt Mills, that have the best preserved of any English lead ore hearths, are only 1 mile to the north. The River Swale is 1/4 mile south of the Hamlet.
Marrick Manor House
The Manor House in Marrick is located in the hamlet's centre, on the north side of Crook Bank Lane. Its out buildings adjoin the former White Horse Inn, a grade II Listed Building. It was the change of use of this inn that resulted in the downgrading of Marrick's village status to that of a hamlet.
St Andrews Church Marrick
St Andrews Church in the hamlet of Marrick is located on the south side of the lane from Marrick. The lane ends at a footpath that leads you into Steps Wood.
The Former White Horse Inn
The former White Horse Inn has a Grade II Listing with Historic England. Following its devolution from an inn Marrick Village ceased to be such and became a hamlet.
The Lodge Marrick
The Lodge is an attractive detached 4 bedroom house in an attractive location. The property enjoys the benefit of south facing walled gardens and has open views across the River Swale to Ellerton and Stainton Moors.
Old Blacksmith's Shop
The Old Blacksmith's Shop has long ago ceased its use as such and has been converted into an attractive domocile.
Harland House Marrick
Harland House is part of a farm consisting of 118 acres of meadow and pasture land.
Old Post Office Marrick
The Old Post Office is found where the lane from Steps Wood meets the junction with Ellerholme Lane, on your left as you round the bend of the Lane.
The Grange Marrick
The Grange is a large detached, south facing house located in Crook Bank Lane in the hamlet's centre.
