Looking to Windermere from Sergeant Man and High Raise – twin summits above Greenup Edge on the Coast to Coast path

Sergeant Man, Greenup Edge, Coast to Coast

Sergeant Man is a Wainwright summit on the south-eastern flank of Greenup Edge, rising to 736 m as a rugged outlier of High Raise (762 m). Its distinctive crag-topped summit overlooks the short glacial valley of Bright Beck, which descends steeply southwards into Stickle Tarn — a classic corrie lake framed by rocky walls. The fell lies on the route from Far Easedale to High Raise, a favourite crossing for Coast to Coast walkers linking Grasmere with the wild uplands of Greenup Edge.

Sergeant Man Greenup Edge

From the moorland plateau of Greenup Edge, Sergeant Man rises abruptly to the south, its rocky summit forming a striking contrast to the smoother fell above. Below its southern face, are the cliffs of Bright Beck Valley and Pavey Ark enclosing the Stickle Tarn corrie — a dramatic glacial hollow marking the divide between Grasmere Common and the Langdale Fells.

Sergeant Man

Though its southern cliffs plunge steeply toward the Bright Beck and Valley and Stickle Tarn, Sergeant Man is easily reached from the north. The final ascent from the Greenup plateau is a short, grassy rise leading to a crown of shattered rock — a favourite Wainwright for walkers seeking drama without difficulty.

Stickle Tarn below Sergeant Man

From the rugged path rising past Belles Knott toward Sergeant Man, the view opens across Stickle Tarn to the Langdale Pikes — Harrison Stickle standing proud above the corrie and Pike of Stickle beyond. The route from Easedale Tarn demands light scrambling near Eagle Crag but rewards every step with expanding mountain drama.

High Raise Summit from Sergeant Man

From Sergeant Man, there is a clear and commanding view of High Raise — the broad dome that forms the parent peak of Greenup Edge. Its rounded summit, crowned by a solitary cairn, contrasts with the sharper rock of Sergeant Man. Though lacking drama in profile, High Raise rewards walkers with an unrivalled central panorama across Lakeland.

Codale Head Source of Codale Tarn

Codale Head lies a short distance north-east of Sergeant Man, a shallow saddle of crags, moss, and peat pools forming the headwaters that feed Codale Tarn below. Though rarely visited, its quiet hollows hold the springs that gather from the flanks of Greenup Edge and the eastern ridge of High Raise.
