Marble Scar Hay Meadows
Marble Scar, Swaledale, Coast to Coast
Marble Scar is a small outcropping of limestone cliffs located on a north tending loop of the River Swale between Ivelet and Gunnerside. The Coast to Coast path passes over its ridge. The Scar is mostly invisible from the north riverbank unless taking a small, little known and hardly detectable path to the riverbank. Marble is created naturally from limestone which became metamorphic during its creation process in the bed of a shallow sea. Swaledale Fossil Marble was once mined in Swaledale but not from Marvel Scar. Fossil Marble, a known Swaledale Marble, is dull grey, sometimes with white crystalline fossils.
Opposite, on the south riverbank, is the hamlet of Satron, Lousy Hill and Satron Moor. Oxnop Scar is located near the top of Satron Moor.

Looking west towards Marble Scar from the Coast to Coast path near to Gunnerside, a large loop northwards in the River Swale flags the Scar's position. Recent actvity has seen a cluster of saplings planted around the path to the Scar.
Marble Scar Close Up
It seems that Marble Scar is a small cliff of limestone and marble. Marble is calcium carbonate that has been exposed in the past to high temperatures and high pressures. This causes the calcite in the limestone to recrystalise into denser calcite crystals,
Ascending Marble Scar
The Coast to Coast path bears its passengers over Marble Scar's raised ridgetop on a large north rising loop of the River Swale.
Pebbled Riverbank
Marble Scar is easily identified by the presence of a huge pebbled riverbank facing it, and also by the location of the hamlet of Satron, which is on the opposite riverbank.
Satron
Satron is a small hamlet stationed opposite to Marble Scar. Ivelet is about 1/2 mile north west from Satron; Gunnerside is about 2 miles east.
Springs at Dyke Heads
A number of springs subsist on the gently sloping land below Gunnerside Pasture and above Marble Scar.
