Culloden Tower, Richmond, Coast to Coast
Culloden Tower, a Grade II Listed Building, is located at the top of the extensive green space known as Tenterbank on the west border of Richmond Town, between the main road (Cravengate), and the River Swale on its south bound loop at Billy Bank Wood. it is 10 miles east of Reeth and 5 miles east of Marske. The Tower is accessed from Cravengate by walking along the Green Walk path.
The former name for this octagonal tower is Cumberland Tower, or Cumberland Temple. It was built in 1746. Today it appears on the OS maps simply as Temple.
The Tower was built over the old base of a pele tower that was on this site between 1732 and 1746. A pele tower is a small fortified keep or tower house that was built along the Scottish Borders between the mid 14th century and 17th century.
Culloden Tower Richmond
Sometime in the 1970's Culloden Tower had need of a complete restoration, having fallen into substantial disrepair. This heroic deed was carried out by the Landmark Trust in 1981. This required converting the lower floor from a cattle shed, replacing the roof and rotted timbers beneath, replastering to its original style, and repairing the exterior stonework.
Cumberland Tower
The Cumberland or Culloden Tower was built as a folly by John Yorke, MP in 1746 with the purpose of commemorating the Duke of Cumberland's army who were victorious in defeating the Pretender to the throne, Bonnie Prince Charlie near Inverness in 1746.

The Tower's ground floor was originally an undercroft, thought to be part of an earlier Hudswell Pele Tower that was once on the site. The undercroft was used as a cow and hay house. The folly tower was built above the undercroft and is octagonal, with an additional 2 floors. Above the front door is an heraldic shield.
Culloden Tower from The Green
The Green is a triangular area of lawned grass to the south west of the town, surrounded by attractive housing, and from where access can be obtained to Culloden Tower, seen atop Tenterbank. The Green Bridge (Richmond Bridge) only yards away, takes its colloquial name from The Green.

Fom Bridge Street a view along the length of The Green provides a clear view towards Tenterbank, upon which is Culloden Tower. Many of the properties in The Green have Grade II Listings. Many of the properties are also 3 storey.
Cottages of The Green
The Green Bridge is part of Bridge Street. The first road north on Bridge Street, after crossing the bridge into Richmond, is The Green. This is an exceptionally popular area to live and lies within a Conservation Area. Many of these properties where originally built around 1740, some of them being conversions from old industrial buildings, one such being a granary.
