Whitcliff Wood, Richmond, Coast to Coast
Whitcliffe Wood is a large tract of mixed woodland that forms a boundary to East Applegarth on its western side. The woodland stretches down to the north bank of the River Swale just a mile outside of Richmond. Whitcliffe Wood extends north to Whitcliffe Scar, which is mostly hidden under the dense foliage of trees, that grow beneath it and cling to its steep limestone buttresses.
The Coast to Coast path passes through Whitcliffe Wood on its way from Applegarth to Richmond. The River Swale, viewed from Whitcliffe Wood, forms the eastern extent of Upper Swaledale.
Richmond from Whitcliffe Farm
The Coast to Coast path exits Whitfcliffe Wood at its eastern end via a lane that becomes Westfileds, a tarmac road. Near to Whitcliffe Wood is Whitcliffe Farm, from where there is a beautiful hedgerow window revealing Richmond, a little more than a mile to the south east.
High Leases Richmond
High Leases Farm has now been converted to a luxurious Airbnb. It has 9 bedrooms and houses up to 16 guests. High Leases is sited at the very edge of Whitcliffe Wood on the Coast to Coast path, and suitable for a large party of Coast to Coast walkers.
Access Lane to Whitcliffe Wood
Between Whitcliffe Wood and High Leases is an access lane. The lane becomes a public road at High Leases. Walking the lane to or from Whitcliffe Wood you are permitted an unobstructed view across the Swale Valley to Hudswell.
Whitcliffe Wood Entrance
In sunny weather Whitcliffe Wood is a remarkable place to walk. It is only 1/2 mile long, as the sun penetrates to the woodland floor. On its west is Applegarth which hosts views across Swaledale to Hag Wood and Thorpe under Stone on the Swale's opposite riverbank.

Whitcliffe Wood's leaf litter, in its browning autumn colours reflects some wonderful golden hues in the westering sunlight. Even half way through the wood, there is ample sunlight.
Whitcliffe Scar
the north side of the coast to Coast path within Whitcliffe Wood is steeply inclined towards Whitcliffe Scar, which begins within the woodland, only 100 yards from the path.
Whitcliffe Wood
A clearing near the Wood's Applegarth entrance allows the sunlight to reflect more indulgently from the mellowing leaves preparing for their autumnal moult.

Emergence into the westering sunlight is imminent as the Coast to Coast path stretches the last 100 yards to the boundary gate.
Whitcliffe Arncliffe
Mature and immature deciduous trees populate the boundary of East Applegarth and Whitcliffe Wood. The land rises north to Whitcliffe Scar.
Hag Wood
From the boundary of Whitcliffe Wood, Hag Wood on the River Swale's south bank dominates the view as the Swale loops around it. Swaleview Caravan Park can be seen to the north west of the Wood.
Lownethwaite Hudswell
Below Whitcliffe Wood, on the Swale's south riverbank, are Calfhall Wood and Hudswell Wood. In the foreground a prominent grove of sunlit trees identify Lownethwaite Cottages and Bungalow.
Lone Tree at East Applegarth
As the sun prepares to dip beneath the western horizon its final gleaming of the day creates a shimmering sensation on a lone tree diffusing its light above the River Swale and its wooded riverbanks.
