Shore Gill, Ivelet, Coast to Coast

On the southern end of Ivelet Moor, above Ivelet Village in Upper Swaledale, is a short but attractive valley, from which the Shore Gill derives. The order of its headwaters is as follows:

Shore Gill is a third order gill, which has subsumed two second order streamlets, namely Grains Gill, and Ivelet Beck. Ivelet Beck has in turn subsumed two first order streamiets, i.e. Rowantree Sike and Green Gill. Grains Gill has subsumed the first order streamlet known as Gull Sike.

The second order Ivelet Beck and Grains Gill converge in the deep wooded valley of Elias's Stot Wood at Kisdon Bottom. Thereafter the conjoined waters are named Shore Gill. Shore Gill flows into the
River Swale at ivelet, a typical Yorkshire Dales hamlet positioned midway between Muker and Gunnerside.

Beale Tarn

Beale Tarn is a small tarn located on Beale Hill on Ivelet Moor. Beale Hill summits at 484m. Beale Tarn is the main source of Gull Sike and one of the main source waters of Shore Gill.

Grains Gill at Kisdon Bottom

Kisdon Bottom is the region below Elias's Stot Wood, which is just north of Ivelet. Grains Gill is deflected from its easterly course just north of the wood, and flows south east towards Ivelet. Looking north west from a small bridge spanning the Gill are the newly planted trees populating the west bank of the valley.

Grains Gill looking South

As Grains Gill enters Elias's Stot Wood its valley deepens and its riverbanks close in. The woodland, even bereft of its summer coat, is remarkably attractive. The Ivelet Beck valley is discernible over the east riverbank, indicated by the line of descending trees.

Grains Gill near its Confluence

Looking down to Grains Gill from the ridge top at Kisdon Bottom the beck is seen just prior to its confluence with the Ivelet Beck.

Gunnerside Lodge

Gunnerside Lodge perches on the raised banks of the River Swale in Ivelet, looking over the Swale to the south and the Shore Gill valley to the east.

Shore Gill in Ivelet

A small cascade is visible on the Shore Gill, while descending the steps from the village to the bridge spanning the Gill.

Shore Gill Bridge Ivelet

to cross the Shore Gill a series of steep steps through the woods must be tolerated in order to attain the bridge, but the view along the Gill is outstanding.

Shore Gill from Bridge

Looking north the Shore Gill is seen coming through the wood from Shoregill Head. At this location it is only a few hundred yards from its confluence with the River Swale.
